Altea Officinalis (also called White Mallow, Malvaccione, Malvolone etc ..) is a perennial plant belonging to the Malvaceae family and used since ancient times for its medicinal properties.

It is widespread in much of Europe and grows spontaneously in humid and swampy places. The flowers have heart-shaped petals with a color that varies from pinkish white to pink / purple but the most used part is the root.

This plant is also known for the juice extracted from the sticky components of the root, which was used as the main ingredient in Marshmallows. The word Marshmallow means "marsh mallow" which, like the marshmallow, belongs to the Malvaceae family. The marshmallow was actually used for the production of pate de guimauve, ancestor of Marshmallow.

The root extract looks like a green/brown powder and is rich in starch, pectins, mucilages, sugars, fats and tannins.

Marshmallow root is widely used in various cosmetic products, aimed at both body and hair care.

The extract has excellent emollient, soothing and protective properties, especially on the hair: they will be more voluminous and shiny. It also has a detangling action. All this makes the marshmallow perfect for dry or damaged hair or an irritated scalp.
