Preservatives and sequestrants

Preservatives are used to preserve products from microbial pollution, sequestrants are useful for controlling the presence of metal ions in products while antioxidants protect the finished product from oxidation phenomena (in the case of the presence of oils and lipid substances in cosmetics, for example).

Preservatives and sequestrants: what they are and why they are useful in self-production

As the word itself indicates, preservatives are intended to preserve cosmetics from pollution by bacteria, yeasts and molds. Their super power is to prevent or reduce microbial proliferation and prevent the product from altering during its formulation and use. 

Antioxidants are instead essential to prevent the alteration caused by exposure to oxygen of the finished product. Sequestrants, also known as chelators, control the presence of metal ions in the formula by binding together and forming stable water-soluble compounds.
