Benzyl benzoate is the ester of benzoic acid and benzyl alcohol. In nature it is found in the balsam of Peru and in the balsam of Tolu, but also in some essential oils such as jasmine and ylang-ylang.

It has preservative, solvent and fixing properties of perfume, which is why it makes cosmetic products more pleasant.

In the therapeutic field, however, the galenic preparation of Benzyl benzoate (pharmaceutical product in cream) can be used to treat scabies, an infectious skin disease.

However, it presents a criticality: it is included in the list of allergens according to Reg. 1223/2009 / EC, for this reason it must be compulsorily declared on the label when used in concentrations greater than 0.001% in non-rinse cosmetics and greater than 0.01 % in rinse-off products.
