Gluconolactone is a polyhydroxyacid consisting of a lactone ring which, by hydrolytic action of the moisture in the skin, releases gluconic acid, responsible for the activity of the molecule. It comes in the form of a white powder soluble in water. It has a strong hygroscopic and long-term moisturizing power due to the presence of numerous hydroxyl groups. Applied to the skin, it promotes exfoliation and cell renewal, modulating the keratinization process. It also has good antioxidant capacity and ability to restore the damaged skin barrier. It is used for the preparation of cosmetic products with a delicate exfoliating action, anti-aging and depigmenting products. It is used at concentrations between 2 and 15%. It does not induce sensitization phenomena and is therefore indicated for delicate skins that tend to redden easily. It is a safe ingredient.
