Hibiscus is a genus of plants belonging to the Malvaceae family which includes about 240 species. The name derives from the Greek and was probably assigned by Dioscorides, a well-known physician of antiquity, who lived in the 1st century AD. Originally from the temperate zones of Asia, it is also widespread today in Europe, North America and tropical zones. It is highly appreciated in Central American countries such as Hawaii, where species from China have crossed with endemic Hawaiian species giving rise to spectacular plants. However, we find large hibiscus crops also in Australia, New Zealand.

Its multiple properties have been confirmed by modern research: it acts as an antiseptic, astringent, emollient, anti-wrinkle and tonic.

The hydrolysed extract of Hibiscus Esculentus (Hydrolyzed Hibiscus Esculentus Extract) is very effective in cosmetics. In vitro studies on cell cultures show that the hibiscus oligopeptides have a mechanical wrinkle-relaxing action by inhibiting the contraction of muscle cells. They also help to effectively prevent oxidative damage and biological aging of the skin thanks to the strong antioxidant and anti-aging properties.
