Magnesium stearate is a salt that originates from the union of two stearate molecules with a magnesium cation. Stearate is nothing but the anion of stearic acid, a saturated fat with 18 carbon atoms that is very common in nature. At room temperature, magnesium stearate is a white, odorless powder that is insoluble in water. Its industrial use is particularly wide, especially as regards pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food companies; it is in fact used as an anti-caking agent, given its excellent smoothness qualities. Magnesium stearate is used in cosmetics and has the following properties: it improves the spreadability of cosmetic powders upon application, it improves the adhesiveness on the skin, it increases the water repellency of the powders and it facilitates compaction.
