Pinene

What is it?

Pinene is a naturally occurring aromatic compound in the terpene family, found in many plants, especially conifers (such as pine, fir, and cypress), as well as rosemary, lavender, and basil. There are two main isomers: α-Pinene and β-Pinene, both known for their fresh, resinous, and balsamic scent.

It is a primary constituent of essential oils from needles and resins and is widely used in natural cosmetics, perfumes, and aromatherapy products.

What does it do in cosmetics?

Purifying and Antibacterial: Pinene possesses natural antimicrobial properties, making it ideal for purifying formulas for oily or acne-prone skin.

Refreshing and Toning: its balsamic aroma delivers a pleasant sense of freshness and vitality, often used in shower gels, shampoos, and massage oils.

Decongestant and Soothing: valued for its effects on the respiratory system and for calming irritated or congested skin.

Aromatherapeutic : in aromatherapy, pinene is known for its stimulating and balancing properties, capable of boosting mood and mental clarity.

Fun Fact

It is a major component of "phytoncide," the healing forest atmosphere emitted by conifers.

Highly volatile, pinene is typically found in the top notes of natural fragrances.
