The Polygonum cuspidatum plant is native to eastern Asia, and is currently widespread in North America and Europe. It is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Polygonaceae family. The plant has vigorous and glabrous stems, which can reach a maximum height of 3-4 metres. Polygonum cuspidatum produces long and robust underground stems (rhizomes), capable of developing in depth. The leaves are alternate and oval, 7-14 cm long and 5-12 cm broad, truncated at the base and provided with an internal margin. The flowers are small, creamy white, produced in late summer and early autumn in erect racemes (clusters) 6-15 cm long. Polygonum cuspidatum is also called "false bamboo", as it is a member of the Polygonaceae family. In the dry extract deriving from the root of the plant, the main bioactive constituent is resveretrol, a phenolic derivative responsible for various therapeutic properties: it is capable of carrying out an antioxidant and cardioprotective activity. The biological activity of resveretrol is supported and enhanced by the presence of other components present in Polygonum cuspidatum: emodin and polydatin. It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
