The Millettia pinnata tree is native to tropical and temperate Asia. Millettia pinnata, also known as Pongamia pinnata or Pongamia glabra, is common throughout Asia and therefore has many different names in different languages, many of which have been used in English to describe the seed oil derived from M. pinnata ; Pongamia is often used as a generic name for the tree and is derived from the genus in which the tree was originally placed. An oil, pongamia oil, is extracted from the seeds of the tree. Other English names for this oil are Honge oil (from Kannada), Kanuga oil (from Telugu), Karanja oil (from Hindi) and Pungai oil (from Tamil). This oil protects the skin from harmful UV rays and effectively prevents skin aging. It is rich in omega 6 and in addition to its sun protection, it has emollient, anti-aging and anti-microbial properties, making it an oil particularly appreciated by skin prone to acne or pimples.
