Solidago Virgaurea

Solidago Virgaurea, also commonly called Goldenrod, is a herbaceous plant widespread in areas with a temperate or cold climate such as Europe, North America and Asia. It grows in both mountainous and hilly areas. The name of the plant comes from the Latin "solidus" which alludes to the concept of consolidating, reinforcing. In fact, this plant has been used since the Middle Ages to heal wounds. The word "Virgaurea" instead, refers to its showy yellow inflorescence. The aerial part grows in a disorderly way and does not reach great heights (maximum 80cm). It is composed of elongated oval-shaped leaves arranged alternately along the stem. The flowering period goes from spring to autumn and generates many slightly scented yellow flowers gathered in panicle inflorescences. The use of the Goldenrod for medicinal purposes has medieval origins. In fact, at that time it was already appreciated for its various medicinal properties. It is used as a diuretic in cases of water retention, urinary tract infections and also to expel kidney stones. It was also traditionally used as an anti-inflammatory and as an antiseptic on wounds. These last two aspects in particular are often exploited in preparations for the oral cavity and throat with a soothing and antiseptic function. Solidago seems to be essential for maintaining the balance of the microbiota residing in the oral mucosa. Unlike frequently used antimicrobials, this extract is able to act against the formation of bacterial and fungal biofilm and at the same time preserves the resident bacterial flora, which is essential for the prevention of infections.
