Active Coal is a substance of natural origin that comes in the form of a light black powder. It is obtained by burning the wood of various plant species including birch and willow. This process is carried out at 600 degrees without a flame in an oxygen-poor atmosphere and is followed by treatments which give the coal one of its most functional characteristics: porosity. This peculiarity gives the substance a strong adsorbent power, already exploited a long time ago in India to make water drinkable.

The purifying function of coal is in fact widely used in other different fields.

In the pharmaceutical field it is one of the products of choice in the case of poisoning and intoxication by the oral route.

Ingested after the poison has the ability to absorb it before the adverse effects are triggered. Its adsorbent capacities are not only excellent for liquids, but also for gases. In this regard it is widely used to treat abdominal swelling, flatulence and aerophagia.

In the field of oral hygiene it is used against halitosis, often caused by the reflux of gastric juices.

It is also widely used in cosmetic preparations: in fact, it can be found in toothpastes with a whitening effect due to its ability to retain tartar, plaque and many other agents responsible for yellowing teeth inside its pores. The whitening effect is also performed by the mild abrasive action of the charcoal on the teeth.

Due to its strong adsorbing action it is not recommended to ingest it after taking drugs as it could decrease its absorption and consequently the effect.

At the cosmetic regulatory level, a limit of its use is indicated, it must not exceed a certain maximum permitted concentration.
