Benzoic acid is a preservative produced synthetically from toluene (aromatic hydrocarbon).

It occurs as a colorless crystalline solid which is poorly soluble in water, although its solubility in water is largely influenced by temperature. It is soluble in organic solvents.

The synthetic product is normally used, but it can be found in nature both in the form of benzoin resin, a balsamic resin obtained from the bark of the plant called Styrax Benzoin, and in some types of fruit, for example in blueberries and plums.

Benzoic acid inhibits the growth of yeasts and molds by creating an antimicrobial effect, which is why it is used as a food preservative and in many cosmetic preparations, such as lotions, creams, hair products and deodorants, always in association with other antimicrobial substances.

It is highly tolerated on the skin, with a low environmental impact.

It is present in many of our products.
