Gamma oryzanol is a blend of esterified sterols, ferulic acid and triterpene alcohols. Its name comes from the rice plant (Oryza sativa), from which it is extracted. It is obtained, in particular, from rice bran oil, but it is also present in other products, such as corn, barley, wholemeal flours, olives and various types of fruit. Used in cosmetics as a natural sunscreen, gamma oryzanol has tonic-invigorating properties. It also has strong antioxidant properties, counteracts the damage caused by free radicals on membrane phospholipids, protecting the skin from oxidative stress and photoaging. Oryzanol has a natural filtering capacity against UVA radiation (maximum absorption at 320 nanometers). Gamma oryzanol is indicated in the formulation of dermo-cosmetic products intended for the treatment and protection of all skin types. The association with other antioxidant substances enhances their activity and their shielding capacity against ultraviolet radiation. It is used at concentrations lower than 1%. It can be used in cosmetic oleolites or lipogels thanks to its solubility in oil or it can be used to functionalize the fat phase of emulsions.
