Zinc Lactate is the soluble zinc salt of lactic acid. It is produced by fermenting sugar and comes in the form of a white crystalline powder.

Lactate zinc and acne: Lactate zinc is an important source of zinc and is part of the skin's natural moisturizing factor (NMF) which has the task of keeping its hydration constant; it is also able to reduce the level of sebum in the skin by inhibiting the enzyme dihydrotestosterone (DHT), involved in the genesis of acne. Sebum is an oily substance secreted by the sebaceous glands on the skin. It has the function of lubricating the hair, keeping the skin elastic and plays an important role in maintaining the surface acidity of the skin which has a protective function. In oily skin, this sebum production is excessive, which makes it look shiny, especially in the so-called T-zone. Zinc Lactate therefore works by blocking the production of DHT and visibly reducing the signs of oily skin and acne. In cosmetics, it is often used in the production of products indicated for these skin manifestations characterized by hyperseborrhoea.

Zinc lactate and dandruff: Zinc lactate is also used in lotions indicated for oily scalps and therefore affected by hyperseborrhea, as well as in products against dandruff. Dandruff is a very common disorder characterized by more abundant than normal flaking of the scalp often caused by excessive sebum production. Also in this case the Zinc Lactate acts by reducing the production of sebum and the oiliness of the scalp, keeping it free from dandruff. In a clinical study the effect of a lotion containing zinc lactate was compared with the effect of a control lotion. The results showed that the lotion with zinc lactate led to a reduction in sebum levels of 24% more than the lotion without.
