Walnut husk

The walnut husk is the fleshy layer that constitutes the outer portion of the walnut shell. It is a non-edible part of the fruit, initially green when mature, but darkening over time to the characteristic dark brown color.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the walnut husk is used for treating various disorders, and its dyeing properties make it highly valued. The oil and powder obtained from the walnut husk act as a coloring agent and can be used to dye fabrics and upholstery. They are also used as natural food colorants, as seen in nocino, the famous italian liquor with a traditional brown color.

In cosmetics field, walnut husk is used to give the skin a temporary tan and rich brown shades to the hair. This is possible due to naphthoquinones that react with the keratin present in the epidermis and hair, forming a pigment complex.

Another interesting aspect of walnut husk is its ability to partially screen solar radiation. This makes it suitable for use in sunscreen formulations, always combined with more effective types of filters. It should be noted that the screening power of walnut husk is mild, and the oil, readily available in the market, cannot replace the use of appropriate sunscreens.

Warnings: The use of walnut husk and its by-products is not recommended for individuals allergic to nuts or other types of tree nuts. Additionally, walnut husk can be toxic to some animals such as dogs and horses. Therefore, caution is advised when using and storing walnut husk around our four-legged friends!
