Cassia Auriculata (botanical name) is a plant native to India and Egypt and belonging to the Fabaceae family. It looks like a small shrub that can reach over a meter and a half in height, with yellowish-green leaves, yellow flowers gathered in small inflorescences and black fruits. Of the plant, to obtain the drug, dried leaves and/or fruits are used.

Cassia performs an extraordinary healing function on the hair: it restructures, strengthens, disciplines and polishes it.

It appears as a green powder, used in cosmetics as a conditioner to make compresses on thin, fragile or damaged hair from aggressive treatments, in order to make it softer, more docile, shiny and full-bodied.

Furthermore, due to its astringent and antibacterial properties, it helps to purify the scalp.

These properties are similar to those of natural red henna, Lawsonia, with the difference that the latter gives the hair coppery reflections, while cassia applied in its natural state does not give the hair any colour. Only if subjected to an oxidation process with an acid substance (lemon juice or vinegar) for at least 12 hours before application, can it give white hair a slightly golden sheen, while it is ineffective on dark hair.
